Attorney Vogel Featured in Conferences on False Claims Act
Feb. 22, 2008 – Attorney Robert Vogel, founding partner of the firm Vogel, Slade & Goldstein in Washington, DC, has been a featured speaker in several recent panel discussions focusing on whistleblower actions and the False Claims Act. He also wrote an article, “Rockwell: Linking the Relator’s Recovery to His Knowledge,” published in the False Claims Act and Qui Tam Quarterly Review, Vol. 46, p. 87. (Nov. 2007).
In a telecast sponsored by the Thompson/West publishing company in February 2008, Vogel addressed the motivations of whistleblowers. He also provided an overview of the Act, and discussed proposed amendments to the Act now pending before Congress. In another telecast, moderated by John T. Boese and sponsored by the American Bar Association in November 2007, Vogel discussed recent developments in the False Claims Act, including the Allison Engine case pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Vogel was also one of three featured speakers at the October 2007 meeting of the Procurement Fraud Committee of the ABA’s Public Contract Law Section. He addressed the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision in the Rockwell case, as well as other recent cases interpreting the Act’s “public disclosure” bar and “original source” exception. Vogel has been a regular presenter to that Committee, and he is currently a Vice-Chair.
In September 2007, Vogel was one of the presenters at a conference on the Act sponsored by Taxpayers Against Fraud. Later that month, he co-chaired a Continuing Legal Education conference in Seattle, WA, on the False Claims Act.
In coming months Vogel will be a speaker at the ABA’s 7th National Institute on the Civil False Claims Act and Qui Tam Enforcement, and at the ABA’s Annual Meeting. At the National Institute in June 2008, Vogel will engage in a debate with conference co-chair Boese about the proposed False Claims Act amendments, and he will later participate in a panel discussion on ethical issues under the Act. At the ABA Annual Meeting in August 2008, Vogel will address recent case law and legislative developments affecting the Act.
